Achilles Tendinopathy
What is Achilles Tendinopathy?
Non-inflammatory degeneration, micro-trauma, or overuse of the Achilles tendon. The thickest tendon in the body, connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. It can affect the mid-portion of the tendon or its insertion point at the heel.
Clinical symptoms include:
-
Localised pain
-
Stiffness
-
Noticeable swelling along the back of the ankle or lower calf
Symptoms are characteristically exacerbated by loading activities such as running, jumping, or climbing stairs, and patients frequently experience marked morning stiffness in the tendon.
Treatment
Ultrasound-guided peri-tendinous hyaluronic acid (HA) injections to improve soft-tissue gliding, reduce friction, and promote tissue repair pathways without risking tendon weakening or rupture associated with intratendinous steroids. This is combined with structured load-management strategies and eccentric strengthening guidance.
