What Causes Wrist & Hand Pain?

The hand and wrist are made up of an intricate network of bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and nerves, pain can stem from several different underlying causes:

  • Tendon Irritation & Compression: Conditions like trigger finger or De Quervain’s tenosynovitis occur when tendons or their protective sheaths become inflamed, causing painful friction or locking.

  • Nerve Compression: Increased pressure within tight spaces—such as the median nerve inside the carpal tunnel—can lead to nerve pinching, producing pain, numbness, or tingling sensations.

  • Joint Wear and Tear: Osteoarthritis gradually wears down the protective cartilage in small finger joints, the thumb base (CMC joint), or the wrist, leading to localized inflammation, pain, and stiffness.

  • Fluid-Filled Cysts: Non-cancerous fluid collections (ganglion cysts) can form along tendon sheaths or joint capsule linings, causing localized pressure and discomfort during hand movement.
