What Causes Ankle & Foot Pain?

The foot and ankle carry your full body weight with every step, so pain here usually comes from one of a few recognisable sources.

  • Repetitive strain on the tendons and ligaments of the foot and ankle — from running, standing all day, worn or unsupportive footwear, or a sudden increase in activity. This is the most common cause of heel, arch and Achilles pain.

  • A direct injury, such as a sprained ankle, a fracture, or a heavy knock to the foot.

  • Wear and tear in a joint (osteoarthritis), often turning up years after an old sprain or fracture that never fully settled.

  • Inflammation of a tendon, the joint lining, or a fluid-filled bursa — from overuse, inflammatory arthritis, or a flare after activity.

  • A trapped or irritated nerve between the toes or around the ankle, which causes burning, tingling or sharp pain rather than a dull ache.

Because foot and ankle pain can come from the bone, joint, tendon, ligament or a nerve — all packed into a small space — getting an accurate diagnosis first makes a real difference to choosing the right treatment.
