Knee Pain
Knee pain can make everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, getting up from a chair, exercising or playing sport difficult. It can develop gradually over time or start suddenly following an injury, and there are several different conditions that can cause similar symptoms.
At Bristol Joint Injections, we assess the likely cause of your knee pain before discussing whether an injection could be appropriate. Depending on the underlying problem, treatment may include physiotherapy, exercise, activity modification, medication or an ultrasound-guided injection.
What Causes Knee Pain?
The knee is a large weight-bearing joint made up of the thigh bone (femur), shin bone (tibia) and kneecap (patella). Cartilage, menisci, ligaments, tendons and muscles all contribute to the movement and stability of the knee.
Pain can arise from the joint itself or from the tissues surrounding it.
Common causes of knee pain include:
-
Knee osteoarthritis
-
Meniscal problems
-
Patellofemoral pain
-
Patellofemoral osteoarthritis
-
Knee bursitis
-
Baker’s cyst
-
Joint swelling or effusion
-
Tendon problems
-
Sports or work-related injuries
-
Previous knee injury
Because several conditions can produce similar symptoms, identifying the likely source of the pain is an important part of deciding on appropriate treatment.
We use ultrasound imaging to assist with assessment where appropriate if you do not already have imaging. We can also refer for other investigations such as an X-ray or MRI when required and can discuss any existing scan or report with you and explain its relevance to your symptoms.
