Ankle Osteoarthritis

What is Ankle Osteoarthritis?

Progressive degeneration and wearing down of the protective hyaline cartilage within the tibiotalar (ankle) joint, leading to narrowed joint space, subchondral bone changes, and joint margin bone spur (osteophyte) formation—most commonly triggered by past trauma, severe sprains, or fractures.

Clinical symptoms include:

  • Deep, aching joint pain

  • Persistent stiffness

  • Recurring joint effusion (swelling)

These symptoms impair ankle range of motion, limit weight-bearing capacity, cause difficulty navigating uneven ground, and often lead to a compensatory limp.

Treatment

Intra-articular ultrasound-guided hyaluronic acid injections to restore joint fluid viscosity, cushion impact, and provide sustained pain relief and lubrication. For severe acute inflammatory flare-ups, targeted low-dose intra-articular steroid injections are utilized to manage acute swelling and pain.
