Frequently Asked Questions - Knee Pain

Which Knee Injection is right for me?

Click here for a comparison (Steroid vs Hyaluronic vs Arthrosamid)

Which knee injection lasts the longest?

It isn't possible to predict accurately how long an injection will help an individual. Corticosteroid is primarily a short-term treatment. HA responses are variable. iPAAG has longer-term follow-up data showing sustained improvement in some patients.

Which injection works fastest?

Corticosteroid is generally the option from these three associated with the most rapid onset of pain relief. HA and Arthrosamid generally have a more gradual response.

Which injection is cheapest?

Corticosteroid is generally considerably less expensive than HA or Arthrosamid.

Can I have Arthrosamid if steroid hasn't worked?

Potentially. A poor response to corticosteroid doesn't automatically mean that you will or won't respond to Arthrosamid because they are different treatments.

Can I have hyaluronic acid if steroid hasn't worked?

Potentially. They work differently, so failure to respond to one does not automatically determine the response to another.

Can you remove fluid before my injection?

Yes, when appropriate. If your knee contains a significant effusion, this can often be aspirated under ultrasound guidance before the injection is performed.

Which injection should I book?

You don't necessarily need to decide before you see us. If you are unsure, an assessment allows us to discuss the different options and whether an injection is appropriate before deciding on treatment.
