Knee Bursitis

A bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that allows tissues to move smoothly over one another. There are several bursae around the knee. A commonly symptomatic area is the pes anserine bursa, on the inner aspect of the knee.

Clinical Symptoms

Bursitis can result in localised pain and sometimes visible swelling.

Targeted Interventions

Treatment depends upon the cause. Activity modification and rehabilitation may be sufficient, while in selected cases aspiration or injection may be considered.

It is important to distinguish an inflamed bursa from other causes of knee swelling, particularly if the area is hot, red or very painful.
