Patellofemoral Pain

Patellofemoral pain is pain arising around or behind the kneecap.

Clinical Symptoms

It is commonly aggravated by activities such as climbing or descending stairs, squatting, running or sitting with the knee bent for prolonged periods. There are several potential contributors, including changes in training load, muscle capacity and the way forces are distributed through the knee.

Targeted Interventions

For many people with patellofemoral pain, exercise and rehabilitation rather than injection are the mainstay of treatment.

However, some people have established osteoarthritis affecting the patellofemoral joint. Where osteoarthritis is contributing significantly to persistent symptoms, an intra-articular injection may sometimes form part of the treatment plan.
