Wrist Osteoarthritis
Persistent wrist pain can interfere with work, exercise, lifting and everyday tasks. Osteoarthritis is one possible cause, particularly following a previous wrist injury or fracture, although there are many other conditions that can produce wrist pain.
What is Wrist Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage and other structures within a joint change over time. In the wrist this may occur as part of the ageing process, but it can also develop following previous injuries, fractures or other problems affecting wrist mechanics.
Clinical symptoms include:
Symptoms can include:
-
Wrist pain
-
Stiffness
-
Reduced movement
-
Swelling

Pain when gripping or lifting
-
Pain when putting weight through the hand
-
Reduced strength
-
Pain during work, sport or exercise
Is arthritis definitely causing my wrist pain?
Not necessarily.
The wrist contains numerous small bones, joints, tendons and ligaments, so pain in this area can have several causes. For this reason, assessment is important before proceeding with an injection. At Bristol Joint Injections we will assess your symptoms and examine the wrist to identify the likely source of your pain. Existing X-rays, scans or medical information can also be considered where relevant.
Treatment
Depending on the cause and severity of your symptoms, management can include:
-
Activity modification
-
Exercise and rehabilitation
-
Wrist supports or splints
-
Pain relief where appropriate
-
Corticosteroid injection
-
Specialist assessment where symptoms are severe or persistent
For appropriate wrist joint pain, corticosteroid can be injected into the affected joint to reduce inflammation and provide temporary pain relief.
Steroid injections do not cure osteoarthritis or repair damaged cartilage. Their purpose is to reduce symptoms, potentially making movement and rehabilitation more comfortable. The degree and duration of benefit varies between individuals.
